Expectations Running High for Maverick Spikers
Mansfield, Ohio - In 2007 Head Coach Audrey Restelli led the Mansfield Campus' first women's volleyball team to a 13-3 record and a runner-up finish in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference tournament. Restelli will look to improve upon that success when her team takes the court for their 2008 campaign.
Restelli will have experience on her side as she returns five starters from that inagural team. Bobbi Cundiff, Julia DeHaan, Maria Flint, and Alea Hessey return as hitters to lead what promises to be a high-powered offense.
The team has plenty of height as Hessey, a 6'3" outside hitter, returns for her sophomore season. Joining Hessey at the position are Cundiff, Flint, and Chelsea Marquis. Cundiff, a 5'11" sophomore, recorded 223 kills and 72 blocks in her freshman season, earning a spot on the ORCC All-Tournament team. Marquis, a 5'10" sohpomore transfer from Muskingum College will also make an immediate contribution to that Mavericks' offensive attack.
DeHaan will lead a talented group of players at the middle hitter position. DeHaan had 219 kills and 89 blocks during the 2007 season. Emily Ruggles, a 5'10" freshman from Fredericktown High School will also help to control the middle of the net.
While Restelli has the luxury of a roster stocked with experience and height, she understands that the team will face a number of challenges. One of those challenges will be replacing the departed libero from 2007, Ashley Bodell, another All-Tournament selection. Restelli will look for sophomore Courtney Loney to fill the vacated position. Loney accounted for 220 digs as a utility player in her first year on the squad.
The team will face a tough test out of the gate with their participation in the 2008 Titan Invitational at Ohio State Newark. The schedule is full of challenges including multiple matches against the only two teams to defeat the Mavs in 2007, Ohio State Newark and Ohio State Marion. It also includes perennial powers Southern State College and Rochester College. The team players their home opener against the Southern State Patriots on September 16th with a 5:30 start time. The season will conclude on October 26th as the Mavericks will look to challege Ohio State Newark's six year stand at ORCC Tournament Champions.
